Black Marble is the solo project of Chris Stewart, who emerged from New York’s cold wave revival scene in the early 2010s. After releasing just one song online, he caught the attention of Sub Pop imprint Hardly Art and released his debut album “A Different Arrangement” in 2012. Blending dark synth-pop, post-punk and melancholic melodies, Stewart quickly established a distinctive sound alongside New York’s underground synth scene.
His follow-up, “It’s Immaterial” (2016), expanded his sonic palette with more melodic elements, while retaining the cool, understated atmosphere that defined his early work. In 2019, Stewart relocated from New York to Los Angeles and joined Sacred Bones Records, releasing “Bigger Than Life”, an album that introduced brighter textures while maintaining his introspective songwriting and detached observations of urban life.
His fourth full-length album, “Fast Idol”, arrived in 2022, balancing unexpected arrangements and hazy electronics with the moody production of his earlier work. Drawing inspiration from synth-pop pioneers such as Martin Dupont and Modern Art, Stewart continues to shape a sound that feels both nostalgic and timeless. As the sole songwriter and performer behind Black Marble, he combines atmospheric synths, infectious melodies and introspective storytelling into a singular vision of contemporary cold wave.
